Writer & The Act of Writing

Writing is what a writer does or should I say anybody who writes is a writer. The simplicity with which I chose to describe what a writer does, must not be misunderstood with the literal meaning of writing. That is to say, mere framing of sentences and paragraphs and so on and so forth does little to be called an act of writing by a “Writer”.

Writing is a magic wand and the act of writing is casting a spell with the help of which the writer brings his / her thoughts into existence.

Writing is a mirror for thoughts. We have a face and we know it but we can see it only when it is reflected from the mirror. Analogically, a writer has thoughts and he knows about them, he feels about them but the writer can see his thoughts coming to existence only when it is reflected from the mirror called the “act of writing”.

Writing is the vehicle with which the writer roams around in the realm of ideas of the reader and plants new seeds to grow into a tree of thoughts. Of course whether the “seed” grows into a tree and then to a forest, in the mind of the reader, depends on multiple factors including but not limited to the quality, context and degree of relevance. Nonetheless writing is one of the most powerful tools to influence, inspire, motivate and for sure, manipulate.

One must appreciate the fact that “thoughts” control “actions" of any individual as is aptly stated by James Allen in his masterpiece “As A Man Thinketh”. As “writings” can influence the thoughts of the reader, it has the potential to influence the actions. The influence may not be limited to the reader but shall transcend across time and space.

Writing from one’s thoughts is the most important method for obtaining clarity. The reason being that when one writes from his thoughts, the quantum as well as the premise of understanding become self-evident.

Writing is, to a greater degree,  an intense form of, the much hyped but less practiced, Feynman technique. In the Feynman technique, it is suggested to “teach” a concept / idea. The act of teaching, apart from making others understand the concept,  throws light on the level of understanding both in terms of the depth and clarity.

The act of writing, from our own thoughts,  goes one step ahead of the act of teaching as is suggested in the name of Feynman technique. This is because by virtue of the act of writing, apart from being conscious of the degree of understanding, we get to know vividly the coherence of the instant idea with the pre-existing concepts and ideas.

Often in the process of reproducing & recreating an idea / concept / thought through the act of writing, a novel or unique way of representation evolves as a result of the natural tendency of our brain to synthesis the current thought with the pre-existing knowledge. Such novelty of expression and representation is, in all probability, unique to the writer. This sense of “creating” something unique and novel has the potential to fill one with satisfaction to the very least thereby making the act of writing as an end in itself…..
